Inspiring a change in behavior through relationships that change the brain. |
Resources Listed below are resources for success with relationship attachment issues.
I have read these books and found them helpful in working with children identified as having Attachment and Relationship Issues. The Developing Mind Critical reading for a good basic understanding of how brain functioning impacts the development of healthy relationships and emotional communication. In particular pay attention to the Memory, Attachment and Trauma section for an understanding of treatment applications.
Parenting From the Inside Out A really good description of what right brain communication looks like. Written by Neuroscientist, Dr. Dan Siegal, and his children’s school principal, Mary Hartzell. The book is a nice blend of science and hands on examples of applying emotionally connecting concepts with a child. When Dan Siegal talks about the caregiver holding a child in their heart and mind, one gets a clear sense of what that looks like and how to do it after reading this collaborative work.
Now, Discover Your Strengths A good resource for setting a positive learning environment in the classroom. The brain is more interested in learning when it is done in a positive manner.
Affect Regulation This is for the serious reader as Dr. Schore has much info to share about emotions, communication and the importance of focusing on right brain, non-verbal communication in setting the child up for academic and social success. While it is a lot of reading, the time invested is definitely worth it for the clinician who wants a better understanding of emotional development applications in treatment. Will also review Diana Fosha. Let me know what you think so far.
What the Bleep Do We Know Anyway? This DVD does an excellent job of visually depicting how neurons connect in the brain as well as what types of behavior encourage healthy connection and growth. Sometimes having a visual when we are thinking of what needs to happen in order to bring about a behavioral change that starts in the brain is useful. |
